Large language model (LLM)

Also called LLM

A large language model is an AI model trained on enormous amounts of text to predict the next piece of a sentence. Doing that very well lets it answer questions, summarise, translate and write code. It produces likely-sounding text, which is usually but not always true.

In one line, for a 12-year-old

An LLM is a super-powered autocomplete that has read a huge part of the internet.

An example

The models behind ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Copilot and Le Chat are all large language models.

Why it matters to people

LLMs sound fluent and confident even when wrong. Checking important facts, keeping private details out and knowing where your conversations go are the core safety habits.
