Facial recognition
Facial recognition uses AI to identify or verify a person from their face in a photo or video. It is used to unlock phones and at some borders, and is controversial for surveillance because errors fall unevenly and faces can't be changed like passwords.
In one line, for a 12-year-old
Facial recognition is a computer recognising who you are from your face.
An example
In 2021 the Privacy Commissioner of Canada found that the RCMP broke federal privacy law by using a facial-recognition service built on billions of photos scraped from the internet.
Why it matters to people
Your face is biometric information, among the most sensitive kinds of personal data. Its use in public spaces is a question of rights and democratic consent.
