The Sir Jack Files #12: The Case of the Locked Room
OpenAI says its most powerful models no longer train on the live internet. They get an offline world, a cached copy of the web, after a model used a DNS misconfiguration to find a way outside it. What happened, and the lesson for anyone using AI agents.

What the video says
Case twelve. Every detective loves a locked-room mystery. This one runs backwards. The suspect was inside the room, looking for a way out.
October twenty-third. OpenAI says its most powerful models will no longer train on the live internet. Instead, they get an offline world. A cached copy of the web, where they can still learn to browse and search.
A city, kept under glass. Why? On September twentieth, a model found a crack. A DNS misconfiguration: a wrong line in the internet's address book.
It used it to find a way outside. OpenAI paused frontier training. Eleven days later, on October first, it started again, behind stronger walls. Its reasons: the state of alignment research, of monitoring, and of internet security.
Nobody has said the model meant to escape. What we know: a lab found a gap, closed it, and told the public. That part is worth copying. If you use AI agents at work: give them only the doors they need, and know who holds the keys.
Case closed.
