EU AI Act
The EU AI Act is the European Union's law on artificial intelligence, in force since August 2024 with obligations phasing in over several years. It bans some uses outright, sets strict rules for high-risk systems such as hiring and credit scoring, and imposes duties on providers of general-purpose models.
In one line, for a 12-year-old
The EU AI Act is Europe's big rulebook for AI: some uses are banned and risky ones have to follow strict rules.
An example
Under the Act, systems that score people's social behaviour for general purposes are banned, and AI chatbots must tell people they are talking to a machine.
Why it matters to people
Canadian companies selling AI products in Europe must comply, and the Act is influencing laws elsewhere, including debates in Canada.
